The number of its patent filings consistently hit the 100K mark for years ’15, ’16 and ’17. However, years ’18 and ’19 weren’t as prolific, with number of filings declining to approximately 70K in 2019
#2. CHINA
From 2016 onwards, China overtook South Korea to have the 2nd highest number of patent filings
China’s number of patent filings averaged approximately 40k over the 5-year period, peaking in 2017 but coming to a sharp decline by 2019

Until 2015, South Korea had the second highest number of patent filings but China overtook it for the remaining 4 years
From 2016-2019, South Korea had the 3rd highest number of patent filings, overtaking Great Britain and Germany each year
Korea’s yearly average number of patent filings for the period was approximately 35K with 2018 and 2019 being its weakest years
