GREEN100® Index Flagship Report 2021

GREEN100® Index Reveals the World’s Top Organizations Innovating for Our GREEN Future & The State of Quality Patents in GREENTECH April 2021

The threat of climate change is real, and it has been the prime talk point of intense local and global debates in the last 3 decades. Time and again, we hear about the adverse effects of climate change on our resourceful planet and spirited human life. This adversity is inflicted by our own choices made in the past and those hurtful choices surely need to change.

Technology is probably the most scalable change driver for mitigating the burden of climate change. Continuous innovations in technology have made full-scale transformations possible in climate-change-causing industries. They have done so by providing end-consumers with more energy-efficient and/or less waste generating alternatives. Many organizations are collaborating to develop technologies that accelerate efforts toward a carbon-neutral planet. These individuals and organizations are making commendable efforts that need to be discovered and showcased.

Sagacious IP’s GREEN100® Initiative

Sagacious IP’s GREEN100® Rankings of the World’s Top Companies Innovating for Our Green Future is a welcome effort in this direction. It adds valuable insight, highlighting organizations’ green innovations and raising awareness of patent quality in sustainability.

The UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and the agreed definition of Environmentally Sound Technologies (EST) are together a great starting point in the direction of a Green Future. Equally so, as a starting point and reference are WIPOs efforts on the IPC Green Inventory and European Patent Office’s work in introducing the tagging system known as the CPC Y-section (Y02 or Y04).

The GREEN100® report uses the CCMT classification to identify a global green patent portfolio of 2.5 million recent patents. The usage of state-of-the-art tools, IP expertise, and systematic usage of big data analytics on such a patent dataset allows for deep analysis uncovering evidence-based findings. Thus, the GREEN100® Rankings have brought forth those organizations for which Climate Change Mitigation Technologies are an essential component of their business and IP strategy.

Despite ongoing discussions, “Environmentally Sound” or “Climate Change Mitigation Technologies” carry varied meanings for different stakeholders. There is certainly clear whitespace when it comes to a common understanding of what is green or sustainable or clean or environmentally sound. Focusing on the Y-tagging scheme ensures a consistent base, an acceptable trade-off for conducting reliable patent data-driven studies.
